If your child’s asthma is made worse by environmental conditions in the home, Children’s Mercy can conduct a free inspection and provide healthy homes counseling.  When there is some kind of condition in the home that is triggering the asthma, such as moldy carpeting and water issues, Children’s Mercy will contact Westside Housing and we will abate the problem.

Lead Safe KC and the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program –

Exposure to lead can cause:

  • Brain damage
  • Speech delay
  • Kidney problems, even death.


Lead can be found in:

  • Chipping paint and dust
  • Dirt outside
  • Toys
  • Jewelry and other products inside
  • Foods
  • Cosmetics – Make-up

To get tested you or your child tested for lead poisoning contact:

Kansas City Health Department at:  (816) 513-6048 to schedule an appointment to be tested.

Once scheduled, you will come to:

Mondays – Fridays: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM (except holidays).

The Health Department can also send licensed lead inspectors to test your home for lead paint.
